News... Zena... Mehn addis neguer aleh?Belu, Anbebu.... Gosh, Yene GobehzzThe 1997 Ethiopian Soccer Tournament Once again the annual event will take place in Los Angeles. CA. If you happen to read this site from abroad or from a small town in the state of Idaho (there are ETHIOPIANS there you say?You bet) Well my friends let me tell you that you should plan ahead of time and try to make it to at least one of these yearly events. Let's begin briefly with the scene as I saw it last year in Washington DC '96... From the time you arrive at the airport and see "eyes" that resemble your own and start to "Selamta Mes-teht" to almost everybody that you brush into, a sudden familiarity notion will rush through your body and eventually you will start to ask yourself this question: "Weiiy Good... am I at Bole International Airport?" You will see everybody and anybody including the "Tutta Lebash with their "Calcee na Koda Tchah-Ma Kene Gah-bee" looking around for their relatives that are supposed to be there but are always late in coming to pick you up... and then you will start to wonder how your own journey will start. You will at least find your old friends from back in the days in Ethiopia when you used to play soccer with a "Birr Kwaas" for a mere "Hamssa Santeem". If not you will either meet them at the hotel or they are lost, just like you, and they are perhaps on their way to North Carolina:"Ehstii Mah-poon Ahkeh-beloot". "Keldeh na Tchah-Wahta" will go hand-in-hand and you will feel comfortable enough with the surroundings, even if you are in a different city like Los Angeles, to go to many Ethiopian Restaurants, hang out places... by the way do you know how to get to the Hotel? Does the Hotel offer a shuttle? If you are renting a car, you should have reserved it a month or two earlier. Don't just follow everybody! They are trying to get the same information just like you... or maybe you can catch a ride with people you just met. It was said that sometimes you don't need a car at an Ethiopian Soccer Tournament... because once you are at the hotel or even the airport, you just walk out to a car that you see and say:"Botha YeiiBekkal Ahnd Sehw leme-tchemehr?" The Soccer fields in Los Angeles will be determined later. You can always check this site for any current info. Now just think awhile back for a second.... Addis Abeba... It is Saturday and the sun is scorching hot, you are waiting in line to get into the Stadium to see "Giorgis and Metchahl" battle it our for a championship. Whether you are sitting comfortably in "Tela Fokk" or sweating it out with everybody in "Mismarr Tehra" or even "Katanga"... That same feeling is what you should expect at any one of the games. Support your local team or if you don't have one just go by what city you liked best when you first visited USA... it worked for some people, and also try to make it to as many games as possible, that is if you are not busy and/or lost trying to get to the stadium. Being among Ethiopians is not an everyday thing for a lot of of people here in the United States. Some of us frequent restaurants or local/headline shows and many other have a network of friends that call up each other and ask:"Sheen-Koort-nah-Kahriia Yee-zghe mett-ahlew, Birr-eh-destoun Amoo-kkoot..." and if you are in Idaho, wellll you have Ethiopian Music on tapes. "Yeh-Gebaal" "Aiiy-Gebahm" are the most widely used chant from the crowd whenever there is a "KKeh-Taht Mehtt".
